BGMEA joins multi-stakeholder effort for climate action in garment sector

Representatives from garment factories, international brands, donor agencies, and service providers gathered recently to develop a unified climate action roadmap for Bangladesh’s apparel industry.

The session, co-hosted by GIZ and Solidaridad Network Asia, highlighted the urgent need for policy alignment, streamlined financing, and shared responsibility to achieve decarbonization.

BGMEA Vice President Vidiya Amrit Khan shared insights on the future of sustainability in Bangladesh’s garment sector, while Director Sheikh Hossain Muhammad Mustafiz outlined BGMEA’s ongoing climate initiatives.

These include energy efficiency programs, adoption of renewable energy, circularity projects, and the development of an ESG data platform — reflecting the industry’s commitment to a greener and more resilient future.

Participants stressed that international brands must go beyond their role as buyers and act as true partners, co-investing in and incentivizing sustainable initiatives.

Through collaborative discussions, stakeholders identified challenges such as policy gaps and financing hurdles, while exploring solutions to advance unified climate targets and scalable renewable energy adoption.

The meeting reaffirmed that collaboration is essential to tackle climate change. With collective effort, Bangladesh’s ready-made garment industry has the potential to become a global model for sustainable manufacturing.
