BB releases Tk 886cr to help pay Aug-Sept dues to RMG workers

In response to a request from the Bangladesh Garment Manufactures and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Bank has disbursed Tk 886 core to facilitate the payment of salaries and wages of garment workers for the months of August and September.

The money was released through Exim Bank and SIBL Bank, according to a release from the BGMEA.

Recently, some RMG factories were not able to pay wages to their workers despite receipt of their export proceeds as five problematic banks failed to pay the money due to acute liquidity crisis, severely disrupting factory activities.

Meanwhile, the BGMEA top leaders and directors met with Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur on 26 August, requesting him for the financial support to help overcome the situation stalemate.

The central bank’s announcement for the fund release came following this meeting.

BGMEA President Mahmud Hassan Khan Babu and other leaders have expressed gratitude to the ministry of finance and the Bangladesh Bank, the trade body said.

He has requested the factory owners to collected their money from the two banks through their respective institutions so that they can pay the dues to their workers.
