Power supply to all polling stations ordered within seven days: Energy adviser

Bangladesh’s power, energy and mineral resources adviser, Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, has ordered authorities to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply at all polling stations ahead of the upcoming general election, directing that connections be completed within seven days.

He said that polling centres currently without electricity must be provided with either grid connections or alternative power arrangements within the stipulated time frame.

The directive was issued on Wednesday at a meeting held at Bidyut Bhaban, which reviewed power and energy supply preparedness for the holy month of Ramadan, the national parliamentary election and the upcoming summer season.

The 13th national parliamentary election is scheduled to be held on 12 February. However, concerns have emerged over the smooth conduct of voting as at least 325 polling stations across the country reportedly lack electricity connections.

In this context, the Election Commission has formally requested the relevant authorities to take urgent steps to ensure power supply at all polling centres.

According to the Power Division, a letter signed by Election Commission deputy secretary Md Humayun Kabir included a list of 325 polling stations across different districts where electricity connections are absent, instructing that arrangements be made without delay. Copies of the letter were sent to divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, returning officers and other concerned officials.

At the meeting, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) chairman Engr Rezaul karim informed the adviser all the necessary measure have already taken to ensure uninterrupted power supply in polling station.

Power Secretary Farzana Momtaz, EMRD secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam and other senior officials of power transmission, distribution and generation companies attended at the meeting.
