‘We want to speak less and work more,’ says Finance Minister

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Sunday said his priority would be delivering results rather than making early promises, as he assumed office at the Planning Ministry in Agargaon.

“We want to speak less and work more,” he told reporters, just two days after taking charge of the ministry.

The minister said he would take time to review the ministry’s work before outlining any plans or policy directions. “I have just arrived at the ministry today. I will sit with my officials, review everything, and then speak. We believe in work,” he said.

Responding to questions about upcoming plans, Khasru reiterated that he prefers a cautious and informed approach. “I speak less and work more. I want to give you objective information, but only after properly reviewing everything,” he added.

He assured journalists that they would receive timely updates once assessments are complete, describing himself as “press-friendly” but emphasizing that comments would come only after careful evaluation.

Asked how frequently he would attend the Planning Ministry, the minister said he would first assess the workload across departments before making such decisions.

In a departure from customary bureaucratic practices, Khasru also discouraged officials from presenting flowers to welcome him. “We need to move away from the culture of giving flowers. Now is the time to work,” he said, urging officials to focus on their responsibilities instead.

Senior officials, including National Board of Revenue Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan and Planning Division Secretary S M Shakil Akhtar, were present during the minister’s first day at the office.
