Governor change ‘normal’ under new govt priorities: Finance Minister

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Wednesday said the recent change in the governorship of Bangladesh Bank is part of a “normal process,” as the new government moves to align key institutions with its policy priorities.

Responding to questions from reporters at the Secretariat, the minister said changes were being made not only at the central bank but across various sectors. “A new government has its own priorities, programmes and policy thinking. To implement those, changes are being brought where necessary. This is a normal process,” he said.

Asked what considerations led to the replacement of the central bank governor, Khasru said the decision did not involve any unusual factors. “There is nothing specific to consider. With a new government, changes will naturally take place in many areas, not just Bangladesh Bank, and this will continue if required,” he added.

The government recently appointed Md Mostakur Rahman as the new governor of Bangladesh Bank, replacing Ahsan H Mansur.

A notification issued by the Financial Institutions Division said Mostakur Rahman has been appointed for a four-year term under Article 10(5) of the Bangladesh Bank Order, 1972. He will assume office after relinquishing ties with all other organisations.

During his tenure, he will receive salary and other benefits from Bangladesh Bank in accordance with terms set out in his contract with the government. The order, issued in the public interest, takes immediate effect.

Ahsan H Mansur, formerly executive director of the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRI), was appointed governor in August 2024 for a four-year term. He was removed from the post after serving for about a year and a half.
