State-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation has introduced temporary limits on fuel purchases at filling stations across the country in a move aimed at ensuring fair distribution and preventing panic buying.
In a statement issued from its headquarters at BPC Bhaban in Chattogram, the state-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) said the decision follows a surge in demand at some filling stations triggered by rumours and misleading information circulating on social media about fuel availability.
Officials warned that such speculation could disrupt the normal supply chain if consumers attempt to stockpile petroleum products beyond their immediate needs.
BPC stressed that the country currently holds sufficient fuel reserves and that the government continues to import petroleum products regularly to meet national demand. It urged citizens not to panic, adding that the fuel supply system remains stable and that distribution is continuing nationwide through authorised depots and filling stations.
However, to discourage hoarding and ensure that all consumers can access fuel during the current situation, the corporation has set temporary daily purchase limits for different categories of vehicles. Filling stations have been instructed to strictly comply with the new restrictions.
The corporation also warned that attempts to purchase fuel beyond the prescribed limits, or to store fuel illegally, would constitute a violation of existing regulations and could result in legal action.
According to the statement, fuel dealers and petrol station operators have also been directed to follow specific operational guidelines, including maintaining proper sales records and adhering to government instructions to prevent irregularities in supply.
BPC further reiterated that petroleum products must be sold at government-fixed prices and warned that dealers are not permitted to charge consumers any additional fees.
Authorities said they are closely monitoring the overall fuel supply and distribution system and will take further measures if required to ensure uninterrupted availability across the country.
BPC called on citizens and fuel dealers to cooperate with the authorities and follow the directives in order to maintain an orderly and uninterrupted fuel supply across the country.
