The government of Bangladesh has announced a new initiative to curb the illegal hoarding and smuggling of fuel, offering cash rewards of up to Tk 100,000 to informants who provide credible information.
In a statement issued , the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources said the move aims to stabilise the fuel market and ensure a steady supply across the country. Authorities say recent months have seen unscrupulous traders stockpiling fuel and engaging in smuggling, creating artificial shortages and causing hardship for ordinary citizens.
Officials believe that involving the public will be key to tackling the issue. Reliable tip-offs will allow law enforcement agencies to act swiftly against offenders, while the identities of informants will be kept strictly confidential.
According to Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation chairman Md. Rezanur Rahman, illegal stockpiling has made it difficult to meet demand despite increased supply.
“Earlier in March, we doubled fuel distribution compared to the same period last year, but it was still not enough,” he said. “On one hand, panic buying has driven up demand, while on the other, dishonest groups have been hoarding fuel.”
He added that the government has formed vigilance teams in every district and appointed “tag officers” to monitor fuel allocations and deliveries at filling stations. Nationwide enforcement drives are also under way, with penalties including fines and imprisonment being imposed on offenders.
The government hopes the reward scheme will encourage greater public participation and help bring illegal hoarding and smuggling activities under control.
