Bangladesh raises LPG prices amid concerns over market disorder

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission has increased the price of a 12kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder by Tk 387, setting the new rate at Tk 1,728 for April.

The regulator also raised the price of autogas to Tk 79.77 per litre, up from Tk 61.83.

The revised tariffs were announced on Thursday, 2 April, by BERC chairman Jalal Ahmed at a press conference held at the commission headquarters.

Despite the latest adjustment, concerns persist over the effectiveness of price controls in the LPG sector. Officially rate have reportedly gone unenforced for the past five months, with industry observers describing the market as highly disorderly.

Although the official price for a 12kg cylinder was set at Tk 1,341 in March, reports indicate that consumers were paying between Tk 1,800 and Tk 2,000 in practice, as retailers charged well above the government approved rates.

BERC had held prices steady at Tk 1,341 in recent months, while autogas had remained at Tk 61.83 per litre prior to the latest increase.
