Bangladesh hikes jet fuel prices sharply, raising pressure on airlines and fares

Bangladesh has sharply increased jet fuel prices, intensifying cost pressures on airlines and raising the prospect of higher airfares.

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) confirmed on Tuesday that aviation fuel prices would rise by nearly Tk 25 per litre, with the new rates taking effect from midnight.

Under the revised structure, jet fuel for domestic flights will cost Tk 227.08 per litre, up from 202.29 taka set in March. The same fuel was priced at just Tk 112.41 per litre earlier this year, underscoring the rapid pace of increases.

The latest move follows another steep rise on 24 March, when prices were lifted by around Tk 90 per litre. Taken together, the adjustments represent a substantial escalation in costs within a matter of weeks.

Fuel for international flights has also been made more expensive, with prices rising to $1.4806 per litre from $1.3216. Earlier rates stood at $0.7384 per litre, marking a significant overall increase.

BERC said the decision reflects higher global oil prices, increased import costs and the need to align domestic fuel rates with international market conditions. The revised prices will remain in place until further notice.

Aviation industry figures warn the increases are likely to feed through to ticket prices on both domestic and international routes, adding to financial strain on passengers while pushing up operating costs for airlines.
