The Aviation Operators Association of Bangladesh (AOAB) has called on authorities to reconsider a sharp increase in jet fuel prices, warning that the move could severely disrupt the country’s aviation sector.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the association described the প্রায় ৮০% rise in Jet A-1 fuel prices as “unjustified” and out of step with current market conditions. The tariff rate fixed by Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), which revised prices based on recent Platts averages, adjusted premiums, exchange rates and unchanged diesel benchmarks.
Under the new structure of the tariffs, domestic jet fuel prices have surged from Tk112.41 to Tk202.29 per litre. For international flights, the rate has increased from $0.7385 to $1.3216 per litre.
AOAB Secretary General Mofizur Rahman said the hike was difficult to justify given the absence of any fuel supply shortage. He noted that about 25 cargo ships have already anchored here last three week, with cargoes purchased at earlier, lower prices, while global oil markets have recently softened. He said: “Under these circumstances, such a steep increase, based on anticipated future price rises, cannot be justified.”
The association also highlighted regional disparities, noting that neighbouring countries such as India and Nepal have kept jet fuel prices unchanged, while increases in Pakistan and Maldives have been significantly lower at around 24% and 18% respectively.
AOAB warned that the effective of the new tariff rate here airlines in Bangladesh would face acute financial pressure, likely leading to higher fares for domestic passengers and increased operational costs across the sector. It added that rising taxes on jet fuel would further compound the burden.
The group cautioned that, if left unaddressed, it could force some carriers to suspend domestic routes altogether, undermining connectivity and sectoral growth.
It urged the government to urgently review the decision and adopt a more “realistic and acceptable” pricing framework to safeguard the stability and long-term development of Bangladesh’s aviation industry.
