Of the projects, 12 are new and the rest are revised schemes that were previously approved by the Ecnec. Of these, the cost of one project has been reduced by Tk 754.26 crore, while the costs of the remaining four projects have increased by a combined Tk 1,024.83 crore.
The approvals came on Monday at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) held in the capital with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus in the chair.
“The interim government has tried to approve at least one or two gas exploration projects, either for digging new wells or improving existing ones, so that Bangladesh’s own capacity develops in the field,” said Planning Adviser Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud at a news briefing later.
He did not agree with some media reports that the interim government is still heavily dependent on LNG imports to offset the energy crisis despite its attempts to improve local gas exploration.
“It is true that we have continued LNG import to address the crisis, but the outcome of the newly approved gas exploration projects will come later,” the planning adviser added.
Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh will implement the 220MW solar power plant at Sonagazi, Feni spending Tk 1,888 crore during July 2025 to June 2028 period. Overseas project loan is Tk 1,624 crore while the Bangladesh government will bear Tk 148 crore and the implementing agency Tk 117 crore.
Under the other energy sector project, state-run oil and gas exploration company BAPEX will dig three new wells at Srikhail, Mobarakpur and Fenchuganj at an estimated cost of Tk 1,136 crore. Its completion will take 26 months until December 2027.
The lion’s share of the money, Tk 909 crore will be provided by the Bangladesh government and the rest will come from BAPEX’s own fund.
