Bangladesh starts importing electricity from Nepal

Bangladesh began importing 38 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Nepal at 12:00 PM today under a five-year power purchase agreement, marking a new milestone in regional energy cooperation.

“We will import Nepalese electricity for five months each year starting in June, as Kathmandu has surplus hydroelectricity during this period,” said Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) Chairman Engr Rezaul Karim in a statement to Just Energy News.

The electricity import will continue annually until 2029, with each season covering the monsoon months when Nepal’s hydro generation is at its peak.

According to the BPDB chief, the tariff for the imported electricity has been set at approximately Tk7 per kilowatt-hour. This marks the first time Bangladesh is sourcing power from Nepal, enhancing regional energy trade and diversifying its import basket.
