Bangladesh to Import 3 LNG Cargoes from UK for Tk 1,442cr

The interim government has approved the import of three cargoes of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the spot market to meet the country’s growing energy demand.

The three shipments, worth a total of Tk 1,442.03 crore, will be sourced from UK-based TotalEnergies Gas & Power Ltd., according to officials.

The approval came at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP), chaired by Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, at the Secretariat on Tuesday. The decision followed a proposal from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division and was made under the Public Procurement Rules, 2008, through international competitive bidding.

According to the purchase plan, the first cargo—set to arrive on October 19–20, 2025—will be supplied at $11.44 per MMBtu, costing around Tk 480.68 crore. The second cargo, expected on October 6–7, will be priced at $11.34 per MMBtu, with an estimated cost of Tk 476.48 crore. The third shipment, scheduled for October 28–29, will be supplied at $11.54 per MMBtu, amounting to Tk 484.88 crore.

Officials said the imports are part of efforts to tackle Bangladesh’s energy shortfall and ensure adequate fuel supplies for power generation and industry. With global energy markets remaining volatile, the government is increasingly turning to spot market purchases to bridge supply gaps.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Finance Adviser acknowledged that the government has been under pressure to raise energy prices—such as gas—every month or two. However, the interim government has refrained from doing so, based on assessments by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division. “That’s a positive development,” he noted.

“Our goal is to ensure a stable supply of LNG so that we don’t face pressure to increase energy prices, which would affect both consumers and industries,” he said.

He added that the government is working to boost LNG supply while also easing fiscal pressure. “Still, it’s difficult to predict how things will unfold in the future.”

The Adviser also mentioned that the government is currently purchasing LNG at relatively reasonable prices.

Fertiliser Import

As per separate proposals from the Ministry of Industries and Agriculture, the government will procure 30,000 metric tonnes of bagged granular urea fertiliser from KAFCO, Bangladesh with around Tk 169.69 crore, 35,000 tonnes of MOP fertiliser from JSC “Foreign Economic Corporation (Prodintorg)” with around Tk 154.90 crore, 40,000 tonnes of DAP fertiliser from OCP, NUTRICROPS, Morocco with around Tk  384.45 crore, 30,000 tonnes of TSP fertilizer from OCP, NUTRICROPS, Morocco with around Tk  215.39 crore, 30,000 tonnes of TSP fertiliser also from OCP, NUTRICROPS, Morocco with around Tk  215.04 crore, 40,000 metric tonnes of MOP fertiliser from Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) with around Tk 177.32 crore and another consignment of 40,000 tonnes of MOP fertiliser from Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) with around Tk 177.03 crore.

Apart from these, the government would procure 15,000 metric tonnes of rock sulphur/bright yellow sulphur/bright yellow sulphur crude from various sources with around Tk 71.42 crore.
