The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has identified new opportunities to expand exports of Bangladeshi ready-made garments (RMG) and accessories to Pakistan, aiming to strengthen bilateral trade ties between the two countries.
The initiative came during a courtesy meeting between BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan and Muhammad Wasif, Chargé d’Affaires of the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka, held at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara. Mr. Wasif was accompanied by Trade and Investment Attaché Zain Aziz. BGMEA Vice President Md. Rezwan Selim and Directors Faisal Samad, Sumaiya Islam, and Fahima Akter were also present.
Discussions centered on enhancing trade and investment cooperation between Bangladesh and Pakistan, with a special focus on the garments and textile sectors. Both parties acknowledged Pakistan’s global reputation in textile production and Bangladesh’s leading role in apparel manufacturing.
During the meeting, the two sides explored avenues for increased textile imports from Pakistan and greater exports of Bangladeshi RMG and accessories to the Pakistani market. It was noted that Bangladesh has made significant advancements in the production of garment accessories, creating new export opportunities.
BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan proposed that Pakistan consider importing textile waste (jhut) from Bangladesh to support its expanding recycling industry. He also pointed out that as the world’s largest producer of jute, Bangladesh can supply raw jute to Pakistan, which would be mutually beneficial.
The meeting further discussed the exchange of technical knowledge, joint participation in trade exhibitions and workshops, and the facilitation of business delegations to promote commercial engagement.
Both sides also reviewed the previously signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between BGMEA and the Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA). President Mahmud emphasized that active involvement from the business communities of both countries is key to implementing the MoU effectively.
To streamline cooperation and ensure sustained progress, both parties agreed to appoint focal points to work jointly on boosting trade and investment relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan.
