BGMEA eyes to turn Bangladesh into ‘Innovation Nation’ in apparel industry

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has partnered with Bangladesh Brand Forum (BBF) to transform the country’s apparel sector from a production-based “factory nation” into an innovation-driven global hub.

The two organisations signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, Dhaka.

BGMEA Vice-President (Finance) Mizanur Rahman and BBF Founder and Managing Director Shariful Islam signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.

The partnership aims to implement a strategic vision titled “From Factory Nation to Innovation Nation – Reimagining Bangladesh Apparel 2030.” The initiative seeks to position Bangladesh’s garment sector as a modern industry driven by innovation, branding and sustainability.

As part of the initiative, an innovation lab will be established at BGMEA to allow young innovators to develop solutions for industry challenges.

A Leadership Academy is also planned to build skilled leadership in the sector. The programme will focus on developing mid- and senior-level executives and encouraging women’s leadership.

To engage the younger generation, the initiative will include youth festivals, campus ambassador programmes and national-level competitions aimed at increasing interest in the apparel sector.

The partnership will also highlight Bangladesh’s green factories globally and produce knowledge reports and case studies on the industry’s sustainability progress.

Efforts will be made to connect Japanese brands with Bangladesh’s environmentally friendly factories and explore the creation of a global sustainable fashion brand involving designers from both countries.

The two-year partnership is expected to strengthen the confidence of international buyers and investors and help position Bangladesh as an innovation-driven apparel hub by 2030.
