The death toll from the devastating fire that broke out at a garment factory and an adjacent chemical warehouse in Mirpur’s Shialbari area has climbed to 16, with authorities warning that the number could rise further as the search operation continues.
According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, the fire that started around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday has not yet been completely brought under control, especially in the chemical warehouse section. “The fire in the chemical storage area is still burning and remains highly risky. We are using advanced technology and drones to monitor the site,” said Lt Col Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Director (Operation and Maintenance) of the Fire Service.
He added that a full-scale search and rescue operation is ongoing inside the affected four-storey building that housed Anowar Fashions, as well as in the adjoining tin-shed chemical depot.
Firefighters initially recovered nine bodies by 4:15 p.m., according to Talha bin Jashim, an officer at the Fire Service media cell. By 7:15 p.m., officials confirmed that the number of casualties had risen to 16.
Eyewitnesses said the blaze first erupted in the washing unit on the ground floor of the garment factory before spreading rapidly to the neighboring chemical warehouse, where multiple explosions were heard. The flames then engulfed the upper floors of the factory, trapping several workers inside.
Heartbreaking scenes unfolded at the site as relatives desperately searched for missing family members, many in tears and disbelief. One woman was seen standing motionless in shock after failing to get news of her trapped loved ones.
Fire service officials suspect that the chemical warehouse lacked proper approval and safety measures, which may have intensified the fire. “We are still investigating the source of the fire,” said Lt Col Tajul Islam.
As night fell, firefighters continued to battle the flames amid fears that more victims could still be inside the charred building.
In the wake of the tragedy, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed his deep shock and sorrow over the deaths in the Mirpur fire.
In a condolence message, he extended heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families and prayed for the salvation of the departed souls. The Chief Adviser also directed the authorities concerned to ensure proper treatment and assistance for the injured and affected families.
