Economy improving, not collapsing: Finance Adviser

Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has said the country’s economy is not collapsing, but instead showing signs of improvement.

Speaking at the Nagad–DRU Best Reporting Award 2025 ceremony at the International Mother Language Institute in Segunbagicha on Sunday, he said that although August had been a difficult month, key indicators are now moving in a positive direction.

“The economy has not been destroyed. The situation has improved. Foreign exchange reserves have increased, and exports are rising,” he said. He added that inflation has fallen from 14 percent to 8 percent and is expected to decline further.

Dr. Salehuddin noted that the interim government took charge at the right time, preventing the situation from worsening. He said the next three months will be crucial for strengthening the economic framework so the next elected government can carry it forward.

Calling journalists “the voice of the people,” he urged them to provide accurate information and highlight both the government’s shortcomings and successes. Constructive reporting, he said, helps ensure better governance and faster progress.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, Nagad Board Chair Kaiser Ahmed Chowdhury, and Nagad Administrator Md Motasem Billah were present as special guests.

This year, 26 journalists from print, online and electronic media were honoured for outstanding investigative reporting. The awards were selected from submissions published or broadcast between September 1, 2024, and October 30, 2025.

The event was presided over by DRU President Abu Saleh Akon, with a welcome speech from DRU General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel. The jury board was led by Financial Express editor Shamsul Huq Zahid.
