Govt buying 2 cargoes of LNG from spot market

The government on Tuesday approved the purchase of two cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the spot market to help meet the country’s growing energy demand.

The decision came at the 11th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) this year, held at the Bangladesh Secretariat with Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair.

Alongside the LNG purchase, the committee also cleared several procurement proposals covering refined palm oil, vaccines, fertilizer and SPC poles to support food supply, public health and power distribution.

Under the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, Total Energies Gas & Power Ltd., UK, was selected to supply the 10th and 11th LNG cargoes, scheduled for delivery on April 24–25 and April 27–28, 2026, respectively, at a price of US$19.77 per MMBtu. Each cargo is estimated to cost Tk 833.39 crore.

In a separate decision, the Ministry of Commerce received approval to procure one crore litres of refined palm oil in five lots through the local open tender method at a total cost of Tk 163.48 crore. Shabnam Vegetable Oil Industries Limited was the lowest evaluated bidder, offering a unit price of Tk 163.48 per litre.

The committee also approved procurement of vaccines for the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) for the fiscal year 2025–26 through direct purchase from UNICEF. The Health Services Division will procure the vaccines through advance payment at a total cost of Tk 604.05 crore.

Under the Industries Ministry, approval was given to import 30,000 metric tonnes of bagged granular urea fertilizer from Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO), Bangladesh, at a cost of Tk 175.35 crore, with the per-tonne price fixed at US$476.375.

Another proposal under the ministry was cleared for constructing a fertilizer buffer warehouse in Chuadanga under the project titled “Construction of 34 Buffer Warehouses for Fertilizer Preservation and Distribution Facilities (1st revised),” with SS Rahman International Ltd. selected to carry out the work at a cost of Tk 43.15 crore.

The committee further approved the procurement of SPC poles under the project “Modernization and Capacity Enhancement of BREB’s Electrical Distribution System (Dhaka-Mymensingh Division) (1st revised)” at a cost of Tk 229.90 crore. A joint venture of Dada Engineering Ltd., Contech Construction Limited, TSCO Power Limited and Pasha Poles Ltd. will supply the poles.

The approvals are expected to strengthen energy supply alongside improvements in food security, agriculture, healthcare and power infrastructure.
