Govt urges energy conservation amid global fuel supply concerns

The government of Bangladesh has urged all institutions and citizens to use fuel and energy resources sparingly in response to the ongoing global energy situation that could disrupt international fuel supply chains.

In a notice issued on Thursday (March 5, 2026) by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, authorities warned that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East may create instability in global fuel markets and affect supply systems.

To address potential risks, the government has instructed all government offices, autonomous bodies, private institutions, industries, and citizens to adopt strict measures to reduce fuel consumption.

Natural Gas Use

The notice advises limiting the use of natural gas to essential purposes only. Authorities also instructed consumers to avoid unnecessary gas usage and ensure proper monitoring to prevent leakage. Illegal use of gas has also been strictly prohibited.

Petroleum Consumption

To reduce the consumption of petroleum fuels, citizens have been encouraged to prioritize public transportation instead of private vehicles. The government also recommended the use of car-pooling systems where possible and urged people to avoid unnecessary travel.

Institutional Measures

Government offices and institutions have been asked to take steps to ensure efficient fuel management, particularly during office hours and official activities. Private organizations were also advised to adopt fuel-saving practices and eliminate excessive use of energy resources.

Officials said these measures are necessary to maintain national energy security and stabilize fuel supply in the face of uncertain global conditions.

The ministry called on all stakeholders to follow the guidelines and raise public awareness about responsible energy consumption.
