The visiting International Monetary Fund (IMF) team has sought a three-year power tariff adjustment and subsidy roadmap plan from Power Division within September 2025.
The IMF team sought it following a meeting with Power Division officials today.
The Power Division has requested to allow three years to develop a phased plan for the gradual withdrawal of subsidies in the power sector.
“They have requested a three-year roadmap that will start in June 2027… but it’s still at the discussion stage,” Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) Chairman Engr. Rezaul Karim told Just Energy News after the meeting.
Another official stated, “We have no other option but to submit the plan by September 2025 without further delay.”
Power Division Secretary Farzana Momtaz and senior official concern attended at the meeting.
According to BPDB, the total power subsidy has reached Tk 68,862.74 crore so far. Of this, the Power Division has received Tk 2,000 crore.
External payment arrears have reached US$624 million as of March 2025.
