Inflation edges up to 8.55pc in July

After easing for three months, Bangladesh’s general inflation edged up to 8.55 percent in July predominantly driven by soaring food prices.

In June, the overall inflation rate on point-to-point basis was 8.48 percent. During the previous two months, the rate was 9.05 percent and 9.17 percent respectively, which declined from 9.35% in March, according to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data.   

The latest data showed that on monthly basis July witnessed a 2.23 percent inflation over June’s 0.57 percent with a surge in Consumer Price Index (CPI) to 138.36 from 133.10 in a span of a month only.  

Meanwhile, food inflation rose year-on-year to 7.56 percent in July compared to June’s 7.39 percent, but July’s monthly inflation jumped to 3.95 percent over June that saw 0.95 percent food inflation on monthly basis.

National average non-food inflation, on the other hand, surged modestly to 9.38 percent last month from 9.37 percent one month ago with 0.84 percent monthly hike, but the rate still remain high.

In July, the overall inflation rate in rural areas increased by 0.09 percentage points, reaching 8.55 percent. Among this, food inflation stood at 7.36 percent and non-food inflation at 9.73 percent.

In urban areas, the overall inflation rate increased by 0.01 percentage points to 8.95 percent. Among this, food inflation was 8.04% and non-food inflation was 9.55%.

Howver, annual moving average inflation at the national level during the August 2024-July 2025 period declined to 9.77 percent, which was 9.90 percent during the corresponding period a year earlier.

Meanwhile, national wage index marginally rose to 8.19 percent in July, up from June’s 8.18 percent.
