No cause for concern over fuel or power supply in March, says Power Minister

Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, has assured the public that there is no risk of fuel or electricity shortages during March, despite growing anxiety over tensions in the Middle East.

He warned, however, that a prolonged conflict between Iran and Israel could trigger a global energy crisis affecting Bangladesh and countries worldwide.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Tuesday, the minister addressed concerns about energy security and outlined the government’s current position and future plans.

Amid fears that the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East could disrupt electricity and fuel supplies during Ramadan, Mr Tuku sought to reassure the public. “We are working tirelessly to ease people’s concerns. We hope to succeed. At least for the month of March, there is no reason to worry about fuel or electricity,” he said.

When asked whether supply would remain stable in the months ahead, he replied: “We are continuing our work and closely monitoring the situation.”

Responding to questions about the potential impact on Bangladesh if the Middle East conflict drags on, the minister issued a stark warning. “If the war becomes long-term, it will certainly create problems for us. Not only Bangladesh — if the conflict is prolonged, every country in the world will face difficulties,” he said.

Following recent strikes in Iran, volatility in global oil prices and the risk of supply chain disruption have increased. According to ministry sources, the government is working to secure alternative supply sources and strengthen domestic reserves to mitigate potential shocks.

Mr Tuku added that the government remains on maximum alert in response to the evolving global situation.
