Power Division allocates Tk 1,500cr for LNG imports amid gas supply uncertainty

The Power Division has allocated Tk 1,500 crore to the Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) for the import of four LNG cargoes to support power generation recently.

While the subsidy is intended to boost electricity production, officials within the Power Division have expressed uncertainty about whether they will receive sufficient gas to meet power plant demands.

This concern arises as the government has already committed to supplying an additional 250 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of natural gas to industrial units to support manufacturing output.

“We have already requested the Finance Division to approve Tk 1,500 crore in favour of EMRD for the import of LNG in 12 installments,” said an official from the Power Division.

However, he noted that the division is still unsure how much gas it will ultimately receive from these imports.
“We have yet to finalize the allocation we will get from the imported gas,” he added.

Power and Energy Adviser Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan stated that the fund was allocated to ensure the availability of additional gas during Ramadan.

He also mentioned that, if necessary, the government would increase electricity production from oil-fired power plants to reduce consumer suffering during the intense summer heat.
