Tarique Rahman has been sworn in as Prime Minister of Bangladesh following his election as leader of the parliamentary party.
The oath of office was administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban this afternoon. Members of the new cabinet are being sworn in subsequently.
Earlier in the day, Rahman was elected leader of the parliamentary party at a meeting of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) held at the parliament complex at around 11:30am, according to BNP media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan.
Prior to that meeting, newly elected BNP members of parliament from the 13th national elections took their oaths of office at the Jatiya Sangsad.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin administered the oath to the lawmakers at 10:43am in the parliament’s oath room.
A meeting of the BNP parliamentary party was held afterwards, where Rahman was formally chosen as its leader.
