Youthful zeal shines at Pahela Boishakh celebrations

Dhaka University is teeming with youthful energy as students and alumni of the Faculty of Fine Arts recreate the iconic ‘Face of Fascism’ motif, ahead of the vibrant celebrations marking the Bengali New Year 1432.

The symbolic artwork, recently damaged by fire, is being rebuilt with renewed passion. Towering at 16 feet, the piece stands as a testament to resilience and artistic defiance.

Festivities are in full swing as preparations near completion for the grand Mangal Shobhajatra (procession of good wishes), set to begin at 9:00 AM on Monday from the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Held under the theme “Harmony of the New Year, End of Fascism,” this year’s procession will feature vibrant motifs, patriotic songs, and live performances by 30 artists—capturing the enduring spirit of Bengali heritage and resistance through art.

Work on the restored motif began late Saturday night using thermocol and traditional materials.

This year’s Shobhajatra will showcase 21 symbolic structures—seven large, seven medium, and seven small—each reflecting themes of social unity, cultural identity, and resilience. Participants from 28 ethnic communities, along with guests from local and international institutions, are expected to join the festivities.

To maintain security and manage crowds, entry into the university premises will be allowed only through the Nilkhet and Palashi intersections. All other entrances and adjacent roads will remain closed during the event. Participants are advised to carry valid identification.

The procession winds its way through Shahbagh, TSC, Shaheed Minar, the Physical Education Centre, and Doel Square, before returning to the Faculty of Fine Arts.

In an effort to ensure safety and uphold the cultural atmosphere, university authorities have prohibited the use of vuvuzelas, the carrying of bags, and the wearing of masks—except for traditional masks crafted by the Faculty of Fine Arts, which can be carried by hand.

Celebrations Across the Country

While Dhaka University remains the cultural epicenter, Pahela Boishakh will be celebrated across Bangladesh with equal enthusiasm. From Chattogram to Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi to Barishal, local administrations, schools, cultural organizations, and communities are organizing rallies, fairs, and musical programs to welcome the new year.

Traditional food stalls, folk performances, and community gatherings will unite people in both urban and rural areas, reflecting the shared spirit of joy and harmony.

Pahela Boishakh stands as a powerful symbol of cultural resilience. This year, the youthful exuberance seen in Dhaka is echoed across towns and villages nationwide—welcoming the new year with hope, unity, and artistic pride. (Photo collected from BSS)
