Gas supply to national grid rises as Excelerate resumes supply

Gas supply to Bangladesh’s national grid is gradually recovering after a four-day disruption, following the early resumption of supply from Excelerate Energy’s LNG terminal at Moheshkhali.

At 4:00pm today, total gas supply to the national grid reached 2,307 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd), with Excelerate Energy initially supplying around 120 mmcfd. Summit LNG was supplying a further 570 mmcfd.

Meanwhile, domestic gas production reached 1,621 mmcfd at the same time.

“We expect gas supply to the grid to increase further as Excelerate gradually raises its supply. The supply is expected to return to normal by 10:00pm,” Petrobangla acting chairman Md Abdul Mannan told Just Energy News.

He said Petrobangla currently has sufficient LNG available to support the increase in supply.

Petrobangla had earlier scheduled the resumption of gas supplies from the Excelerate-operated Moheshkhali LNG terminal for 23 August. However, the terminal resumed operations ahead of schedule after a four-day disruption that began on Tuesday.

“We expect to reach 500 mmcfd, as required by Petrobangla. At present, we are supplying around 120 mmcfd,” Md Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan, country manager of Excelerate Energy Bangladesh, told Just Energy News.

The Moheshkhali LNG terminal was shut down on Tuesday afternoon following a shortfall in imported LNG supplies, worsening an already severe gas shortage and putting additional pressure on the country’s electricity system.
