The government has announced a special incentive package for the installation of rooftop solar power systems, including battery storage, as part of a wider drive to expand renewable energy and strengthen the country’s long-term energy security.
Taking into account current market prices and the costs quoted in various tenders received by the Power Division, the government has set the maximum generation cost for rooftop solar systems with batteries at Tk8 per unit.
Under the special incentive scheme, a 20 per cent profit margin and an additional 11.25 per cent premium will be added to the generation cost, bringing the tariff for electricity generated under the scheme to Tk10.50 per unit.
If a consumer is able to install such a solar power system at a cost lower than the stipulated amount, the savings will be treated as the consumer’s dividend.
Under the Net Metering Guidelines, 2025, consumers who install rooftop solar systems by 28 February 2027 and supply surplus electricity to the national grid after meeting their own requirements will receive Tk10.50 for every unit of electricity supplied to the grid for the following three years, until 28 February 2030.
Electricity distribution companies will maintain records of participating consumers, the amount of electricity supplied to the national grid and details of electricity payments, including the incentive component.
The incentive payments will be transferred directly to consumers’ bank accounts or mobile financial service accounts. Cash payments will not be permitted under any circumstances.
The incentive will not apply to solar systems installed after 28 February 2027.
Solar panels, batteries, inverters, meters and other equipment used in the systems must comply with the technical standards set by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA).
Policy support for the scheme will be provided through the one-stop service centre already established by the Power Division. Consumers will also be able to obtain assistance from district and upazila-level offices under the country’s electricity distribution companies.
The government notification will come into effect on 1 September 2026.
