Summit LNG terminal to shut for four days

Gas supply across Bangladesh is likely to face pressure as Summit’s floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, will remain closed for four days for emergency maintenance.

The shutdown will begin at 8am on November 4 and continue until 4pm on November 7. During this period, daily gas supply from the country’s two LNG terminals to the national grid will fall from 920 million cubic feet to 600 million cubic feet.

According to a Petrobangla official notice, LNG regasification operations at Summit’s floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) will remain suspended during the maintenance period.

As a result, daily gas supply to the national grid will decline by around 320 million cubic feet (mmcf). The authorities have expressed regret over the temporary inconvenience to consumers.

Bangladesh currently has a daily gas demand of around 3,800 mmcf, against an actual supply of approximately 2,650 mmcf, leaving a shortfall of around 1,150 mmcf every day.

The two LNG terminals jointly supply around 920 mmcf of gas to the national grid daily. The temporary shutdown of Summit’s terminal will further reduce imported gas supplies, potentially worsening shortages in the power, industrial and residential sectors.
