Bangladesh minister and Rosatom chief discuss speeding up power generation from Rooppur nuclear plant

Bangladesh’s Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam and Alexey Likhachev, director general of Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, held a high-level bilateral meeting in Vienna on the sidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) 70th General Conference.

The meeting focused on the latest progress of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project and measures to ensure that electricity from the facility is supplied to Bangladesh’s national grid as soon as possible.

Both sides agreed to accelerate construction of the Rooppur plant in line with the project’s targets, with the aim of beginning electricity generation at the earliest opportunity.

Minister Anam stressed the need to complete the remaining work on the project as quickly as possible while maintaining international nuclear standards and the highest levels of safety.

Mr Likhachev assured the minister that Rosatom would continue to provide uninterrupted technical and strategic support for the project.

At the end of the meeting, Minister Anam and Mr Likhachev exchanged commemorative gifts as a symbol of the friendly relations between Bangladesh and Russia.

Members of delegations from both countries attended the meeting, which was held in a cordial atmosphere. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to moving the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant towards successful and timely completion and bringing it into operation as soon as possible.
