Remembering the life and legacy of Professor Hamiduzzaman Khan

Professor Hamiduzzaman Khan, Bangladesh’s eminent sculptor and artist, who passed away on 20 July 2025, was remembered at a special ceremony held on Wednesday at the Hamiduzzaman Sculpture Park inside the Summit Gazipur 464 MW Power Plant premises in Kodda, Gazipur.

Reflecting on his friendship with the late artist, Muhammed Aziz Khan, Founder Chairman of Summit Group of Companies, said:

“One day, while sitting in the office, I was talking with Hamid Bhai about sculptures. He proposed, ‘I want to do something big.’ I offered, ‘Come with me. We are building the world’s largest reciprocating power plant, 464 MW in Gazipur. There are many pieces of metal scraps lying there. You can create something with those.’ His gentle hands turned those metal scraps into art, and he created Bangladesh’s largest sculpture park. He was so happy! He worked day and night here, creating and teaching us how art is born from labour, how art elevates humanity. Because of his presence, the Summit family has realized that art and industrialization complement each other.”

The programme began with a guided walking tour of the park, led by Ivy Zaman, wife of Professor Hamiduzzaman Khan, showcasing his remarkable works. Following the tour, distinguished artists including Nisar Hossain, Mainul Abedin, Charukala faculty member Nasimul Khabir Duke, and sculptor Ivy Zaman reflected on his immense contributions to Bangladesh’s art and culture and his lasting influence on future generations.

Maj Gen (Retd) Dr Monirul Islam Akhand, Managing Director of Summit Power Limited, thanked the guests for attending, while Muhammad Aziz Khan delivered a virtual closing speech.

The event was attended by Hamiduzzaman’s peers, colleagues, and students from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka, Narayanganj Art College, and Dhaka Art College, as well as members of leading art galleries, family members, and Summit staff who had worked with him during the development of the sculpture park.
