Asia Foundation delegation meets BGMEA President

A delegation from The Asia Foundation met with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Mahmud Hasan Khan at his office on August 30, 2025, to discuss mutual cooperation for the development of Bangladesh’s garment industry, with particular focus on enhancing the skills of women workers and ensuring sustainable improvements in workplace conditions.

The delegation included The Asia Foundation’s Country Representative Kazi Faisal Bin Seraj, Program Director Aini Islam, and Communication and Outreach Lead (Aparajita) Kashfia Kayes.

At the meeting, held at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, discussions centered on strengthening women workers’ skills, promoting leadership, and ensuring their overall welfare in the garment sector.

BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan praised The Asia Foundation for its continuous efforts to support the development of the apparel sector. He said, The contribution of the garment industry as the driving force of Bangladesh’s economy is undeniable. We are especially committed to the protection and welfare of women workers. Collaborations with international organizations like The Asia Foundation will play an important role in achieving our goals.

During the meeting, The Asia Foundation expressed interest in working with BGMEA on several areas for the holistic development of women garment workers, including skill development training programs, health and safety initiatives, mid-level management training, community-based daycare centers, and introducing circularity practices in the apparel industry.

Both sides expressed hope that the meeting would further strengthen their relationship and create new opportunities for joint initiatives in the future, making Bangladesh’s garment industry more humane and sustainable.
