The Department of Environment (DoE) is set to build Dhaka’s first public green building, which will also function as an Environmental Centre of Excellence, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan announced on Sunday.
The building will feature advanced green technologies, including rainwater harvesting, solar power, and sewage treatment plant (STP) facilities.
Hasan said expertise from the country’s garment sector—already a global leader in green building practices—will be tapped to ensure world-class standards.
She made the announcement while addressing the Annual Development Programme (ADP) Implementation Progress Review Meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat today.
The Adviser added that DoE will also establish its own offices in industrial hubs like Gazipur to strengthen environmental oversight at the local level. “Effective enforcement requires proper facilities, including sufficient transport support,” she noted.
Hasan stressed the importance of timely and efficient implementation of government projects. “Delays and negligence undermine public trust and block progress. Every official must carry out responsibilities sincerely,” she said.
The meeting was attended by Environment Secretary Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Additional Secretary (Climate Change) Mohammad Navid Shafiullah, Additional Secretary (Administration and Development) Md. Khayrul Hasan, DoE Director General Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman, and several project directors.
