Lights on shopping centres to be switched off from today to save energy

The government has decided to switch off decorative lighting at shops and shopping centres across the country in an effort to conserve electricity and fuel.

The decision was made following a meeting with leaders of major business associations, where a set of energy-saving guidelines was agreed.

The decisions were taken at a meeting on Sunday at the Power Division, chaired by State Minister for Power and Energy Anindya Islam Amit. The meeting focused on measures to reduce electricity and energy consumption amid growing concerns over energy use.

Representatives of business organisations attending the meeting agreed to implement several steps aimed at reducing power consumption. Under the new guidelines, all decorative exterior lighting at shopping malls and commercial establishments will remain switched off.

In addition, shopping malls and business premises have been instructed to set air-conditioning temperatures at 25°C or higher to limit electricity use.

The government has also directed that illuminated signboards be turned off immediately after shops or establishments close for the day.

Business leaders present at the meeting said they would work to implement the decisions and cooperate with the government in efforts to conserve electricity and energy.

Representatives from several organisations attended the meeting, including the Bangladesh Shop Owners Association, the Bangladesh Shopkeepers’ Association, the Dhaka Metropolitan Shop Owners Association, the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
