Bangladesh inflation eases to 8.71pc in March

Bangladesh’s overall point-to-point inflation eased slightly in March 2026, offering marginal relief to consumers, according to the latest data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.

General inflation declined to 8.71 percent in March from 9.13 percent in February, driven mainly by a notable drop in food prices.

Food inflation fell to 8.24 percent during the month, down from 9.30 percent previously. However, non-food inflation edged up to 9.09 percent in March from 9.01 percent in February, indicating continued pressure in non-food categories.

Rural-urban trends

Inflation eased across both rural and urban areas, though the pace of change varied.

In rural areas, overall inflation dropped to 8.72 percent in March from 9.21 percent in February. Rural food inflation saw a significant decline to 8.02 percent, compared to 9.07 percent a month earlier. In contrast, non-food inflation in rural regions rose slightly to 9.38 percent from 9.34 percent.

Urban areas also experienced a moderation in inflation, with the general rate falling to 8.68 percent in March from 9.07 percent in February.

Urban food inflation declined sharply to 8.78 percent from 9.87 percent, while non-food inflation increased marginally to 8.62 percent from 8.57 percent.

Mixed signals

The latest figures suggest easing pressure on food prices, which had been a key driver of inflation in recent months. However, the uptick in non-food inflation points to persistent cost pressures in other sectors, tempering the overall relief for consumers.
