The government on Thursday approved the import of one cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Singapore at a cost of nearly Tk950 crore to help maintain a stable gas supply across the country.
The approval came at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, at the Secretariat.
Under a proposal from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, the government will procure its 42nd LNG cargo through the international quotation method in line with the Public Procurement Rules, 2025. The cargo is scheduled for delivery on August 15-16.
Singapore-based Vitol Asia Pte Ltd was selected as the lowest bidder. The company will supply the LNG at $22.35 per MMBtu, according to the approved proposal.
The total procurement cost has been estimated at Tk949.43 crore, including advance income tax.
The proposal received final approval following recommendations from the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase.
The government said the LNG import is aimed at meeting the country’s growing energy demand and ensuring an uninterrupted supply of natural gas.
