Bangladesh has announced a significant increase in the price of furnace oil (HFO), with the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) raising the rate by Tk 24.59 per litre.
Under the new decision, the price has been set at Tk 94.69 per litre, up from the previous Tk 70.10. The revised rate will come into effect from midnight on Sunday.
In a press release issued on Sunday, the commission said the adjustment had been made in accordance with Sections 34(4) and 34(6) of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission Act, 2003.
The decision follows a public hearing and a detailed review based on proposals submitted by the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) and oil marketing companies.
The statement noted that, under an order issued on February 22, 2026, furnace oil prices are subject to adjustment every three months or as required.
In line with this provision, the latest revision takes into account the average international price of refined furnace oil and the US dollar exchange rate, particularly as no crude oil imports were recorded in March this year.
A committee formed on March 15 analysed Platts benchmark prices and exchange rate trends for March, and subsequently recommended a revised price for April. The recommendation was reviewed and approved at special commission meetings held on April 5 and 12.
Industry observers warn that the increase is likely to raise costs in electricity generation, manufacturing and other energy-intensive sectors. Analysts suggest that higher production costs at furnace oil-based power plants could ultimately be passed on to consumers.
