Commerce minister calls for strong, apolitical FBCCI to represent business community

Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir on Sunday called for transforming the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry into a strong, credible and apolitical institution that can effectively represent the country’s business community.

Speaking at a meeting with business leaders at the Commerce Ministry, the minister said FBCCI must evolve into a truly representative and unified platform capable of articulating business concerns and influencing policy through constructive engagement.

“We want to see FBCCI as a strong platform for the business community,” he said, stressing that the apex trade body should play a more proactive role in protecting business interests and presenting their demands to the government.

He added that while the organisation should be able to apply positive and constructive pressure to secure policy support, it must remain free from political influence.

Muktadir emphasized that FBCCI should act as a key partner to the ministry by providing practical, evidence-based inputs in policymaking.

Strengthening the organisation’s institutional capacity, he noted, would be essential to making it more dynamic and results-oriented.

Highlighting governance issues, the minister said competent, forward-looking and energetic leadership is crucial for revitalising FBCCI. “Its leadership should come from within the business community and must be committed to safeguarding their interests,” he said.

Reassuring business leaders, he said the government remains committed to creating a business-friendly environment. A new import policy is in its final stage and will be unveiled soon.

The government also plans to form dedicated committees, comprising business representatives, to simplify services under the commerce, industries, and textiles and jute ministries.

Additional Secretary (Export) and FBCCI Administrator Md Abdur Rahim Khan also spoke at the meeting.

Business leaders, including former BGMEA president SM Fazlul Haque, former FBCCI president Mir Nasir Hossain, BKMEA president Mohammad Hatem and others, shared their views on making FBCCI more effective and business-friendly.

Several participants also proposed appointing an administrator from within the business community ahead of the next election to enhance the organisation’s credibility and operational efficiency.
