Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir today informed the Jatiya Sangsad that Bangladesh currently operates 24 commercial wings in 21 countries across the world to promote and expand exports, says BSS report.
The commercial wings are located in Brussels, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Geneva, London, Moscow, Ankara, Canberra, Ottawa, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Beijing, Kunming, New Delhi, Kolkata, Tehran, Tokyo, Jeddah, Brasilia, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Singapore, and Dubai.
The minister made the disclosure while responding to a starred question from independent member Rumeen Farhana from Brahmanbaria-2 constituency during the question-answer session in the House today.
The minister said the government has prioritized signing strategic Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) at bilateral and multilateral levels with key countries, economic blocs, and regions across Asia, the Far East, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
These initiatives aim to expand export markets and attract investment.
Highlighting policy directions, the minister noted that tariff reductions will be implemented gradually, alongside the removal of non-tariff barriers, improved market access, and strengthened cooperation in technology and investment.
“These steps are expected to enhance export diversification, generate employment, and ensure long-term sustainable economic growth,” he added.
He further said that, in addition to product diversification, Bangladesh is actively participating in international trade fairs and sending trade delegations abroad to explore new markets.
The minister also mentioned that proposals have been adopted in the national budget to reduce or completely withdraw import duties on several products.
“Around 110 items have been exempted from duties, while duties on 65 items have been reduced, which will help lower import costs,” he added.
The minister said an annual action plan has been formulated to achieve export targets. The government has also taken initiatives to resolve trade disputes and other complexities arising between importers and exporters.
