Fire at JERA Power Plant Canteen injures 12, operations unaffected

A fire at the officers’ canteen of a dormitory building operated by JERA Meghnaghat Power Limited injured 12 people on Wednesday, though electricity generation at the plant continued without disruption, the company said today.

The incident occurred at around 12:30pm local time on 13 May at the canteen facility, which is located separately from the main power plant building, according to a statement issued by the company.

Those injured included four workers employed by a third-party kitchen service provider and eight company personnel who were present in the canteen at the time of the blaze.

All of the injured were transported to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka using ambulances and plant vehicles operated by the company. They are currently receiving treatment.

JMPL said it immediately activated its emergency response procedures following the incident and is working with authorities to support the victims and their families.

Preliminary findings from investigators suggest the fire may have been triggered by a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) leak from a stove in the kitchen area, although an official investigation remains ongoing.

The company stressed that the incident had no impact on power generation, with the plant continuing to operate under the direction of the National Load Dispatch Center and the Bangladesh Power Development Board.

Senior government officials, including Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain, Anindya Islam Amit and Md. Rezaul Karim, visited the hospital to express support for those injured, the company added.
