Govt prioritises self-reliant energy policy, vows sector clean-up: Saki

The government is formulating a self-reliant energy policy to strengthen long-term energy security, alongside efforts to remove corruption and irregularities from the power and energy sector, State Minister for Planning Zonaeyd Saki said on Sunday.

Speaking to journalists at his Planning Ministry office, Saki said the twin initiatives are part of broader reforms aimed at improving governance and efficiency in key sectors.

He said the government is also moving towards an investment-oriented economic model that prioritises returns, job creation and environmental sustainability.

Promoting the use of new technologies in agriculture and industry, as well as encouraging youth engagement in innovation, are among the key priorities.

On data governance, the minister said official statistics are being reassessed following allegations of past manipulation.

The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) has been asked to conduct a forensic review of its data, including methodologies used to calculate indicators such as inflation.

“We want accurate and transparent data. Nothing should be hidden,” he said.

Saki said projects with 60–70 percent progress are under review, with plans to consolidate similar initiatives under unified programmes to enhance efficiency.

Project directors will be held accountable for delays and cost overruns, in line with directives from the prime minister, while a policy is being developed to create a structured pool of project managers.

He added that the upcoming national budget will prioritise marginalised groups, with increased allocations for education, healthcare and social safety net programmes, alongside efforts to restore confidence in the banking and financial sector.
