The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has appointed retired Major General Dr Md Shahedul Islam as its secretary general, as the country’s apex apparel trade body looks to strengthen institutional capacity amid mounting global challenges.
Shahedul, who has more than 35 years of experience spanning military leadership, diplomacy and academia, has already assumed office, according to a BGMEA statement issued on Saturday.
During his military career, he served as Bangladesh’s defence attaché in Washington, D.C., where he was awarded the Legion of Merit by the United States in recognition of his service.
He holds a PhD from the University of Dhaka on workers’ skills assessment and development, along with an MPhil and an MBA. He also earned a master’s degree in Management Studies from Osmania University.
Following his retirement from the armed forces, Shahedul served as dean at the Bangladesh University of Professionals. He also held the positions of treasurer and professor at the Central University of Science and Technology and participated in several United Nations peacekeeping missions.
BGMEA said his experience in strategic leadership, international engagement and workforce development would help the organisation enhance the competitiveness of Bangladesh’s ready-made garment sector through innovation, skills development and stronger institutional capacity.
Speaking after taking charge, Shahedul said he would work closely with the BGMEA board and garment manufacturers to address global economic headwinds, expand product and export market diversification, and strengthen workforce skills to improve Bangladesh’s position in the international apparel market.
