Adani CEO urges immediate payment of overdue power bills; Power Division offers no timeline

The visiting Adani Power Chief Executive Officer (CEO) SB Khylia on Thursday urged the Bangladesh government to immediately settle overdue electricity bills amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars for power supplied from the company’s 1,600MW plant in Jharkhand.

During a courtesy call with Power Division Secretary Farzana Mamtaz at the Bangladesh Secretariat, the CEO pressed for urgent payment, citing mounting bank loan obligations. He was accompanied by Adani Power President (Commercial) M.R. Krishna Rao.

According to sources, Khylia raised concerns over seven months of outstanding payments, which Adani officials estimate at around $900 million. In contrast, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) places the figure at under $700 million.

Khylia also brought up a pending proposal submitted in January to waive approximately $50 million in late payment surcharges for the period between January and June 2025. He expressed frustration over BPDB’s lack of response to the proposal.

In response to the Just Energy News, Power Division Secretary Farzana Mamtaz downplayed the discussion, describing it as a routine courtesy meeting.

“We are making regular payments to Adani,” she said. “However, full payment is not possible due to policy restrictions from the Ministry of Finance.”

Officials attending the meeting indicated that another session may be held soon to address the issue further. Earlier in the day, the Adani delegation also met with the BPDB chairman to discuss the matter.

Meanwhile, a high-powered committee is currently reviewing the power purchase agreement signed with Adani Power (Jharkhand) during the previous Awami League administration.
