Bangladesh has proposed developing a second-phase 1,320-megawatt coal-fired power plant at Matarbari in Cox’s Bazar, with the project expected to require about US$1.5 billion in investment.
The proposal was raised during a meeting between Muhammad Anis Matta, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, and Aninda Islam Amit, Bangladesh’s State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Matta is visiting Bangladesh on an official visit from October 5 to 9.
Bangladesh also discussed the possibility of sourcing coal from Indonesia for the proposed Matarbari project, according to an official familiar with the discussions.
During the meeting, the Indonesian side also proposed setting up a lubricant manufacturing plant in Bangladesh, according to officials sources.
Amit said Bangladesh would review the Indonesian proposal, the official said.
The discussions also covered broader areas of bilateral cooperation. Both sides reaffirmed the longstanding and friendly relations between Bangladesh and Indonesia and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.
They expressed interest in exploring further opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation in the energy and other sectors.
