Bangladesh to address climate vulnerability at COP29 despite world leaders lose confidence on funding

Bangladesh will address climate vulnerability at UN climate change conference (COP29) tomorrow despite top leaders lost confidence about the future new climate finance goal.

Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus today left Dhaka for Azerbaijan’s capital Baku on a four-day state visit to attend the global climate summit “Conference of Parties-29 (COP-29)”.

About the Bangladesh agenda, Professor Ainun Nishat Bangladesh will address climate vulnerability specially recent floods in eastern Bangladesh.

Recent floods in eastern Bangladesh caused damage estimated around $1.20 billion, according to a study by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD).

The study highlighted that the damage represents 1.81 percent of the national budget for fiscal year (FY) 2024-25. The floods, which began on August 19, 2024, were caused by continuous heavy rainfall and upstream water flows, affecting 11 districts in the region.

Indian President Prime Minister Narendra Modi, French President Emmanuel Macron will miss the climate summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin is not going to the UN climate conference as well that begins today at Baku in Azerbaijan.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa and Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also appear to be skipping the climate conference this year.

The 29th conference of the parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change began Monday in Baku of Azerbaijan amid calls to parties to push for agreement right from the start.

“Now it is the time to show that global cooperation is not down for the count. So I urge you all, let us rise together,” UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell said at the opening of the COP29.

“In the past few years, we’ve taken some historic steps forward.  We cannot leave Baku without a substantial outcome. Appreciating the importance of this moment, Parties must act accordingly,” he said.
