BERC cuts LPG prices by as global energy costs fall

Bangladesh has sharply reduced the retail price of privately supplied liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), cutting the cost of a standard 12kg cylinder by Tk 357 as lower international energy prices feed through to consumers.

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced on Thursday that the maximum retail price of a 12kg LPG cylinder has been reduced to Tk 1,528 down from Tk 1,885. The new prices took effect at 6pm local time and will remain in force until further notice.

The regulator also lowered the price of autogas by Tk 16.53 per litre, setting the new maximum price at Tk 70.40 per litre.

BERC said the price revision reflects lower international benchmark prices published by Saudi Aramco for July. Under the new calculation, the contract price for propane has been set at $580 per metric tonne and butane at $600 per metric tonne, producing a weighted average of $593 per metric tonne based on Bangladesh’s standard LPG blend.

The regulator said it also factored in import costs, including $180 per metric tonne for freight and traders’ premiums, alongside an average exchange rate of Tk 123.08 to the US dollar.

Under the revised pricing structure, the maximum retail price of bottled LPG has been set at Tk 127.30 per kilogram. This puts the price of a 12.5kg cylinder at Tk 1,591, while larger cylinders, including 15kg, 20kg and 45kg models, have also been reduced proportionately.

Prices for privately supplied LPG delivered through reticulated networks have also been cut, with liquid LPG capped at Tk 123.55 per kilogram and gaseous LPG at Tk 274.50 per cubic metre. BERC said retailers must not charge above the regulated prices for bottled LPG, reticulated LPG or autogas.

State-supplied LPG prices remain unchanged. A government-issued 12.5kg cylinder will continue to cost Tk 776.93.

The latest reduction follows a smaller price cut announced in June, when the regulator lowered the price of a 12kg LPG cylinder from Tk 1,940 to Tk 1,885. The latest revision means consumers will pay Tk 357 less for the standard cylinder than they did a month ago, marking one of the largest monthly reductions in recent years.
