Chinese investors show renewed interest in Bangladesh’s key sectors

Bangladesh’s core economic sectors are drawing heightened attention from Chinese investors, driven by recent policy reforms aimed at stabilising the currency and streamlining investment procedures, says BIDA.

A high-level delegation led by Ashik Chowdhury, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), visited Shanghai and Guangzhou from 20 to 26 July to promote investment opportunities.

The highlight of the visit was a major investment seminar jointly organised by BIDA and the Embassy of Bangladesh in Shanghai on 21 July, which saw participation from over 100 Chinese investors. Companies such as Handa Industries and New Tiger Energy shared their experiences of operating in Bangladesh and discussed the country’s evolving investment environment.

During the visit, the delegation held more than 25 bilateral meetings with Chinese companies expressing interest in sectors including renewable energy, ready-made garments (RMG), healthcare, and consumer electronics.

“We are encouraged by the positive engagement from Chinese companies,” said Executive Chairman Ashik Chowdhury. “These interactions allowed us to highlight recent policy progress in Bangladesh, particularly in areas such as currency stability and simplification of investment procedures. We were pleased to receive positive feedback on these efforts.”

The delegation included senior officials from BIDA and BEZA, alongside representatives from leading financial institutions such as Citibank NA, Eastern Bank PLC, HSBC, and Standard Chartered.

The team also engaged with key Chinese business associations and members of the non-resident Bangladeshi (NRB) community to explore future collaboration. Early-stage discussions were initiated on establishing BIDA’s first overseas office in East Asia to support sustained investor facilitation.
