The high-powered independent national committee responsible for reviewing deals made under the under the Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provision) Act 2010 (Amended 2021) in the power sector has ordered the submission of detailed information on these agreements within one week.
The committee’s convener, Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury, disclosed this information on Monday, September 16, after a meeting held in the boardroom of the Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (DESCO).
Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury clarified that no discussions related to energy took place in the current meeting. However, in the next meeting, the committee will focus on energy-related matters on September 28, 2024.
He added that the committee will gather, scrutinise, and analyze data on various issues related to the power sector. Following this, the committee will submit recommendations or a report to the interim government. For now, the collection of information is the primary task.
The committee has requested data regarding the power-generating companies that entered into contracts under special provisions. The Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, along with the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), has been asked to submit this information to the national committee within seven days.
The meeting was attended by several key members of the committee, including Professor Abdul Hasib Chowdhury from the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of BUET, former COO of KPMG Bangladesh Ali Ashfaq, Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA), former Lead Economist of the World Bank Dr. Zahid Hossain, and Professor Moshtaq Hossain Khan from the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences at the University of London.
