The Maitree Super Thermal Power Project at Rampal in Bangladesh’s Bagerhat district emerged as the country’s largest independent power producer for the second consecutive month in December 2025, exporting 640 million units (MU) of electricity to the national grid.
The coal-fired plant accounted for 11.5 per cent of Bangladesh’s total net power generation of 5,531 MU during the month, underscoring a sustained improvement in operational performance, according to officials familiar with the data.
Fuel security at the plant has also strengthened in recent months. Around 800,000 tonnes of coal were unloaded over the past two months, while on-site reserves stood at nearly 200,000 tonnes at the end of December.
The stockpile is expected to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during the peak demand period surrounding the holy month of Ramadan.
The Rampal facility, formally known as the Maitree project, was developed under bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and India and is operated by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Limited (BIFPCL).
Despite its dependence on imported fuel, the plant’s large scale, consistent output and improved fuel logistics have helped stabilise electricity supply to the national grid, easing pressure on power shortages and supporting industrial activity at a comparatively lower cost, according to an official statement.
BIFPCL managing director R Sarangapani and project director Ramanath Pujari praised the project team for what they described as dedication and perseverance, expressing hope that the momentum would continue and contribute to Bangladesh’s broader development goals.Rampal Power Plant
