Bangladesh’s energy regulator has cut the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for September, although households continue to face higher costs amid an ongoing shortage of piped natural gas.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) reduced the LPG price by Tk 1.03 per kilogram, bringing the price of the widely used 12kg cylinder down by Tk 13 to Tk 1,585, from Tk 1,598 previously.
The revised price will take effect from 6pm on Wednesday.
The price of a 12kg cylinder stood at Tk 1,528 in July. Although it has fallen slightly this month after rising by Tk 70 in August, consumers are still paying Tk 57 more per cylinder than they were in July.
The increase is particularly significant for households that have increasingly turned to LPG for cooking because of shortages in piped gas supplies, putting additional pressure on household budgets.
According to BERC, the average Saudi Contract Price (CP) for LPG in September was set at $647.75 a metric tonne, based on Saudi Aramco’s propane-to-butane ratio of 35:65.
The commission said it had adjusted the domestic LPG price after taking into account international LPG prices, shipping costs and traders’ premiums, among other factors.
