In response to the imposition of reciprocal tariffs by the US President Donald Trump’s administration, the Bangladesh government will send two letters to the United States within the next 48 hours.
This decision was made during a meeting held on Sunday at the Ministry of Finance’s conference room, Press secretary to the Chief Advisor, Shafiqul Alam told the media.
One letter will be addressed to President Trump from the Chief Advisor, and another will be sent to the US Trade Representative (USTR) from the Trade Advisor.
Shafiqul stated that the meeting was attended by four advisors, a high-level representative, a special ambassador, about 10 secretaries, and four representatives from the business community.
The press secretary noted, “We are constantly in communication with their (U.S. representatives). In addition to the officials at their embassy in Dhaka, USTR officials are also present here. As part of our decision, we will send two letters. Both will be dispatched within the next 48 hours. One letter will be from our Chief Advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump, and the other will be from our Trade Advisor to the USTR.”
When asked about the contents of the letters, he explained, “The specifics of what will be included and the language to be used were discussed today. The meeting included four advisors, a highly-ranked representative, a special ambassador, and almost ten secretaries, along with four representatives from large businesses. After discussions, the decision was made to send the letters within 48 hours.”
He further added, “Whatever is included in the letters, it will be business-friendly. The interests of Bangladesh’s businesses will be prioritized. We aim to be more business-friendly than the competing countries of Bangladesh, ensuring a win-win situation for both the U.S. and us. This will help increase market access for us.”
The press secretary concluded that the US is the largest market in the world, and there are significant opportunities for Bangladesh to export billions of dollars there, as discussed by advisors and business leaders.
